  1. INTRODUCING DESKTAPE
  2. DeskTape allows you to mount digital audio tapes (DAT) on the desktop. You copy files to or from the tape like you would to a hard disk. Since it is a mounted volume, you can view and open documents directly from the tape.

  4. ABOUT THIS DEMO
  5. This demo version of DeskTape is fully functional except the tape volume size is limited to 40MB.

  7. COMPATIBILITY
  8. DeskTape is compatible with DDS, SCSI-2 DAT mechanisms from Hewlett-Packard, Sony, WangDAT, Wangtek and Archive. Some DAT drives can be configured (by a DIP Switch) for SCSI-1 or SCSI-2. Refer to the documentation for your drive to configure it to SCSI-2.

  10. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  11. You must have a Macintosh Plus or higher, System 6.0.5 or later, and 2.5 MB of contiguous hard disk space on your startup drive. The startup volume should be a hard disk.

  13. INSTALLATION
  14. • Drag the DeskTape icon to the System folder. Under System 7, DeskTape should be placed in the Control Panels folder. 
  15. • Restart your Macintosh.
  16. • Insert a blank tape. The standard blank disk dialog should appear. (DAT tapes take 2 to 3 minutes to format.)
  17. • After the format, the tape icon should appear on the desktop. You can now copy files to the tape.
  18. • You should copy at least one file to a newly formatted tape. Otherwise, you will be forced to reformat it the next time it is inserted.

  20. THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR
  21. • There is a bug in the firmware of Sony DAT drive model SDT-4000. Use only firmware version 2.07 or later. 
  22. • You should NOT share a tape volume over a network. However, you can copy network volumes to a tape.
  23. • Some tape drives have non-standard compression formats and you may have problems interchanging tapes with other drives. The preferred compression format is DDS-DC. Also, compressed tapes cannot be used with non-compression drives.
